6 Must-try Pain Perdu in Lebanon

“Pain Perdu”, a must-try dish in Lebanon, is known as French Toast in English. The literal meaning of “Pain Perdu” is “Ruined or Lost Bread”. But today, it refers to a sprinkle of sugar and cinnamon over French toast that gives the dish its name.

Pain Perdu is a typical Lebanese dish enjoyed mostly for breakfast or brunch. It’s also very easy and quick to cook up in just a few minutes.

Made by spreading the bread with butter, then folding it in half, sprinkling it with sugar and cinnamon, and ironing the butter on top of the bread, Pain Perdu is sweet and crunchy and you will find it everywhere in Lebanon.

In addition, the taste of Pain Perdu will change with each bakery and chef!

Here are six must-try Pain Perdu in Lebanon:

I’ve had the Pain Perdu at SUD many times. On a carefree day, we went to their Dbayeh location and SUD Mar Mikhael while traveling from Harissa. SUD’s Pain Perdu is eaten with ice cream and has a crunchy, caramelized crust encasing a soft, moist interior. I’ll keep coming back for this.
